These are my Top 10 Favourite Quotes from The Giver. I think that by picking favourite quotes from a text, it provides an opportunity to show preference and understanding of major themes and ideas in a text. At the beginning of studying a novel, students could be asked to mark a quote they liked the best in each chapter, and then share them once they have completed the novel. They could then relate these quotes to major themes in the novels, either discussed beforehand or identified on their own, showing their understanding of the language in the text and how it relates to the bigger picture/message of the novel.
