Below is an identity text that I created which represents my upbringing, that occurred between two destinations. Growing up, I always felt like I had to choose one place or the other, but recently I have realized the beauty and fortune of being from somewhere in between. I wrote my identity text on a map of Alberta, beginning it directly across from where I grew up.
I AM FROM… I am from Family time, mother-daughter talks Sibling fights and puppy-dog walks I am from Volleyball, dance class, piano lessons and the like Endless encouragement and my favourite purple bike I am from Laughter, kindness, and last-name pride Good grades, loving parents, and school-bus rides I am from Lots of love and blueberry pies Decorations galore and big blue Alberta skies I am from Always in between; stuck in the middle Country or city? The decision so vast, yet so little I am from Delburne phone, Red Deer mail Friends being too far away Always carving a new trail I am from Confusion and comfort in two different places Like night and day Stuffy city or wide-open spaces? I am from Feeling torn, like I always had to choose Why can’t I have both? What have I got to lose? I am from Small-town beginnings with big-city dreams I am proud of where I came from And finally happy with being from somewhere in between |
