Before my first year of college, I was quite unfamiliar with blogging. Wikipedia gives a really well-rounded definition of blogging, which I think is a very good starting point for those who are new to it. I have come to realize that there are numerous benefits to it.
First and foremost, blogs are an excellent place for teachers to self-assess themselves. By blogging, teachers are able to determine how effective their teaching is and share their challenges and successes in the classroom. These types of blogs from teachers can serve as a fantastic resource for other teachers who are looking for new and exciting ideas to implement into their teaching. They also reassure teachers, especially student or beginner teachers, that if some aspects of their teaching are not going as expected, there are always other teachers out there that have had the same or similar difficulties at one point, and there are solutions to them as well. I found the Top 14 Teacher Blogs very interesting and I think they are excellent examples of how teacher blogs can be used as a very valuable resource for fellow colleagues.
Blogging is also an excellent way to show growth and improvement as well as communicate with others. For instance, students can use blogs to write journals to their teachers, or express any issues and concerns that they are perhaps not comfortable sharing in person. They can also be a great place for students to share their work with others. Integrating Blogging into the Curriculum, really made me realize that blogging can and should play a very important part in the classroom, and it can be integrated into every aspect of school. I had not really thought about how technology such as blogging cannot just be thrown into certain lessons, but needs to be planned and implemented at the appropriate times. For parents, classroom blogs allow them to be more aware of and connected to their child’s learning without having to be in the classroom. Blogging is a fantastic tool that I will definitely make it a part of my future classroom.
