Assessment was not a very prominent part of my first practicum, but I did experiment with some forms of both formative and summative assessment throughout. I was exposed to assessment during my assessment class at the beginning of PSI, but as soon as I got into practicum, I quickly learned that assessing students can be quite challenging. Throughout my time in Claresholm, I tried my best to formatively and summatively assess my students in order to see how well they were understanding what I was teaching them and provide marks for their report card. Below are some examples of formative and summative assessment that I utilized throughout my PSI practicum.
Formative:
Below is a worksheet/activity that I used while teaching students how to write and construct paragraphs. Prior to this activity, I taught students about the different parts of a paragraph (topic sentence, detail sentences, and concluding sentence). I then had students complete this activity in order to see if after instruction, they were able to identify the different parts of a paragraph, as well as place them in the correct order.

Summative:
Below is a study guide and unit test that I created for the Hearing and Sound unit in Science. The study guide includes everything that we covered throughout the unit and the test was created using information that was placed on the study guide. Overall, students did well on the test, as we did lots of interactive experiments and activities throughout the unit, as well as lots of review before the test occurred. This was the first study guide and test that I had created and I found them both to be quite successful. Making the test was a good realization for me that sometimes traditional assessment, such as tests, is an acceptable way to assess student learning, as long as you set your students up for success.
On the study guide, I included a note to parents asking them to review the material with their child before the test. I also sent an email home to parents with a similar explanation, which had the study guide attached and asked them to contact me with any questions or concerns that they had. I believe that by keeping parents aware of how they can help their child succeed demonstrates my ability to achieve KSA L, which can be seen in more detail here.
